Norwegian Prime Minister Meets with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing

On February 6, 2006, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg met with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing in Oslo and both sides exchanged views on further developing Norway-China relations.

Stoltenberg spoke positively of Norway-China relations. He expressed that the rapid development of the Chinese economy has not only improved the lives of Chinese people, but also provided better opportunities for deepening bilateral cooperation in various fields. He hoped to develop the cooperation with China in field of energy and at the same time carry out the cooperation with China in poverty reduction, public health, children immunization and lowering infant death rate on the global scale.

Li Zhaoxing said that China-Norway relations develop soundly. The exchange and cooperation between both sides in politics, economy, trade, culture, public health, education, science, technology and polar research have yielded fruitful results. Both sides have maintained close communication and coordination on international affairs such as the UN and bird flu prevention and control. The Chinese government attaches importance to the relationship with Norway. China hopes to learn from successful experiences of the harmonized development of Norwegian economy and society and strengthen the cooperation with Norway in various fields.

On the same day, Li Zhaoxing held talks with Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. During the talks, Li Zhaoxing suggested that both sides strengthen contacts between governments and other sectors, expand cooperation in quality control of aquatic products, management of fishery resource, sailor training, shipbuilding and clean energy, and strengthen cultural and academic exchanges. He expressed that the Chinese side will actively support the Ibsen Year activities, which will be held in China. He also hoped that the two countries strengthen coordination in such international affairs as African development, peacekeeping and poverty reduction.

Støre agreed with the suggestion mentioned above. He hoped that both sides prioritize the cooperation in environmental protection. Støre reaffirmed the adherence to the one-China policy on the Taiwan question.

In addition, Støre introduced the Norwegian position on the incident that its embassy in Syria was burned down because of Prophet Cartoon. Li Zhaoxing expressed that different religions and civilizations should respect each other and live in peace together. The safety of diplomatic missions should be guaranteed according to the international laws. He hoped that the concerned parties keep restrained and properly handle this incident so as to avoid new conflicts.

On February 5, Li Zhaoxing met in Oslo with Larsson, Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Lebanon. Both sides believed that the situation in Middle East is worrying. It is very complex and complicated. The UN should continue to make active efforts to promote he Middle East peace process.
