On February 22, 2010, Ambassador Tang Guoqiang was invited by the Oslo Military Society to deliver a speech "the Current Situations in China and its Foreign and Defence Policies".
In his speech, Ambassador Tang answered six questions frequently asked by the people outside of China. Ambassador Tang said that China should be judged in an objective, changing and global vision. China's relations with the rest of the world has undergone historical changes. China's development will present the world with more opportunities rather than threats. A more developed China will adhere to the peaceful development, continue unswervingly its open-up policy of mutual benefits, and develop the friendly cooperation with all countries on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence. China pursues a defence policy which is purely defensive in nature, and its military build-up serves the purpose of safeguarding national security and unification and maintaining a smooth economic and social development. Ambassador Tang also talked about the economic situation in China. He stressed that China took decisive actions to cope with the financial crisis, and adopted "ten major approaches" to swiftly expand the domestic demands, thus forming a complete and systematic package to promote a stable and moderately fast economic development. Positive progress has been made in 2009 with a GDP growth of 8.7%. Ambassador Tang also touched upon the relations between China and Norway and answered questions.
The speech was well received by the audience. They said the speech helped deepen their understandings of China.
