At the invitaion of the Arctic Frontiers of Norway, Ambassador Tang Guoqiang attended the conference entitled "Living in the High North" on January 25, 2010 and spoke about China's view on the Arctic.
In his speech, Ambassador Tang said that evolving environmental changes in the Arctic have been exerting great impacts on the living conditions of the entire mankind and also affecting the natural, economic, and social aspects and the sustainable development in China. The Chinese Government attaches great importance to the issue and is of the view that all Arctic states and the entire world community should make concerted efforts to maintian the ecological environment in the Arctic. China respects the sovereignty of the Arctic states and their sovereign rights and jurisdictions rights under relevant international law, and would like to stengthen mutually-beneficial cooperations with all the parties concerned, and contribute to the peace, stability and sustainable development in the Arctic. China wishes to promote the scientific research and cooperations with other countries, and welcomes scientists from other countires to participate in scientific observation work in China's Yellow River Staion in the Arctic and the Arcitc maritime scientific expedition activities organized by China.
Ambassador Tang's speech was well received and China's positions on the Arctic issue were highly appreciated. Participants at the conference said that, as a big country in the Northern Hemisphere, China's attention to the environmental changes in the Arctic, and participation in the scientific expedition, research and cooperation in the region would play a positive role in maintaining the sustainable development in the Arctic.
