In the afternoon of September 28, a grand reception was held by H.E.Chinese Ambassador and Mrs.Tang Guoqiang at the Chinese Embassy compound to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Norway. Over 400 guests including officials from the Norwegain governments, parliament and military, and many friends from all walks of life, ambassadors and diplomats from diplomatic missions in Norway and representatives of overseas Chinese enterprises andstudents attended the reception.

Ambassador Tang delivered a speech at the reception. He said that "since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and especially since China started the historic journey of reform and opening up in 1978, China has made great achievements in economic and social development, and its national strength has grown remarkably". China's development has contributed greatly to the peace and development of the world. Ambassador Tang stressed that "China remains a developing country and she has a long way to go before the target of building a well-off society in all respects that benefits over a billion people could be achieved". The Ambassador told his audience that the Chinese people are full of confidence about their future.

Ambassador Tang also talked about the Sino-Norway relations. He said that "over the past 55 years, the relations between the two countries have grown steadily and gratifying achivements have been made through the concerted efforts of the two countries". China would continue to develop the friendly relations and cooperation with Norway on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. And Ambassador Tang said that he was sure the bilateral relations would have a bright and splendid future as the "Sun"painted by Edward Munch.

State Secretary Elisabeth Walaas of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry also made a speech at the reception. She spoke highly of great achivements China have made during the past 60 years and the healthy development of the relations between the two countries. She said that the exchanges and cooperation in fields of economy, trade and culture have been deepened constantly and a partnership full of vitality has been established between the two countries over the years. Norway would continue to support China's development, and she was confident the relations and cooperation between Norway and China would be continually enhanced in the future.

Many guests extended their warm congratulations to the People's Republic of China on her 60th birthday and to the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Norway. They spoke highly of the remarkable achivements made by China and a constructive role China is playing in political and economic fields in the world arena, and expressed their best wishes for China's prosperity and the well-being of its people and a further deepening of friendship between China and Norway.
